Spring has sprung!

Spring has sprung! After enduring a long, dark, dreary winter when everything appears lifeless and devoid of hope, spring emerges like a breath of fresh air. Vibrant life bursts forth, with bright colors seemingly appearing out of nowhere as if they had been waiting for this moment all along.

I absolutely adore spring—it’s more than just a season to me; it’s a source of vitality. Despite my roots in the mountains of West Virginia and my years spent in the chilly Northeast, I’ve never been one to revel in winter, ever. Instead, during the depths of winter, I find solace in the mantra: spring is coming, spring is coming. And when spring finally arrives, I am filled with gratitude, basking in every ray of sunlight and marveling at each gorgeous bloom. However, there’s a twist—I’m a singer with allergies! One of my favorite times of the year also brings its own set of challenges. Fellow singers who battle allergies can surely relate. So, what’s a vocalist and vocal coach to do?

One of my favorite times of the year also brings its own set of challenges.

Allow me to share my insights! After decades of singing amidst allergy season, I’ve discovered a few strategies that have made a world of difference. Here are my top three:

Three Solutions for Allergies

1. Sinus Rinse: Despite the eye rolls it may provoke, sinus rinsing tops my list for good reason. It has spared me from countless sinus infections by effectively flushing out allergens and other irritants. The saline solution serves a triple purpose—clearing allergens, warding off infections, and thinning stubborn mucus.

2. Xlear Rescue Nasal Spray: This natural nasal spray is a lifesaver for relieving sinus congestion, offering much-needed relief during allergy season.

3. Allergen Immunotherapy Injections: Several years ago, I invested the time and resources into intradermal allergy testing and subsequent treatment. While I initially sought relief from the typical sneezing and runny nose symptoms, the results were astonishing. Within a few months, I felt as though I had reclaimed my youthful voice. I hadn’t realized the extent of inflammation my allergies were causing to my vocal folds, not just during spring but throughout the year. My voice continues to express gratitude for undergoing allergen immunology.

For singers grappling with allergies, there is indeed hope. What strategies have helped you navigate allergy season? Share your experiences—I’m eager to learn from your insights!
